Why is my website not converting leads? (And how to fix it)
Let me guess, the only thing you want more than your third coffee of the day hour is a website that gets you seen, heard, booked and raved about.
But right now that feels more like a fever dream, because all you’re seeing is people visiting your website, clicking around, hanging out on your portfolio and service pages, acting super keen - and then nada.
Gone, faster than the survival rate in a Scream movie.
And you know your sh*t, your clients swoon over your work, and your reputation on socials and through referrals is chef's kiss. So the fact that your website sits there doing absolutely crap-all for your business? Cue the rage.
But before you throw more testimonials at every page or convince yourself the problem is your portfolio layout, I'm gonna tell you to back the f up. Because the reason your website traffic isn't converting into leads? It's probably not what you’ve been thinking.
The real reason your website traffic isn't converting
In my experience, why your website traffic isn’t converting has zilch to do with your design or how many five-star reviews you've got.
It's your words.
The headline your dream client reads the second they land on your homepage.
The services page that either makes them think "yes, THIS" or close the tab.
The about page that either sounds like you or sounds like a LinkedIn bio you wrote at gunpoint.
All of it, right down to the tiny bit of text on the button that leads them to book a call with you.
Also known, to self-confessed word warriors like myself, as your website copy.
Why your website copy is costing you leads
Your dream client finds your website - through Google, through a referral, because someone sent them your link - and they start reading. At that moment, they're deciding whether you're their person. Not when they DM you or when you’re on a discovery call together. Right then, while they're scrolling through your homepage at 11pm in their pyjamas.
If your words aren't speaking directly to them, showing them exactly what working with you looks like, making them feel like you get their world completely, and guiding them towards that “this is literally like destiny, where do I sign ”moment? They're clicking that back button all the way to someone else's booking page.
And nobody helpfully emails you to say, “Hey, just so you know, your services page lost me at paragraph two.” They just disappear, and you’re left wondering what the f is going on; like you are right now.
But lucky for you, I don't gatekeep. So consider this a free sneak peek into exactly what a website copywriter looks for when a site isn't converting and how to turn it all around.
The copy crimes killing your conversions
Here are the website copy crimes I see showing up again and again:
1. There's no clear direction on the page, so visitors wander around and leave without doing anything. And it’s not that they weren't interested, you just didn't tell them what to do next.
2. Your services page is all deliverables, zero transformation. The revisions, the turnaround time, what's included - your dream client isn't buying that. They're buying the result. What does their shiny, new life look like on the other side of working with you?
3. You’re killing it on Instagram, with a feed that pops and DMs that ping, but your website copy is giving vintage vibes, and not in a cool way. When someone clicks through from your bio to your homepage, it’s like turning back time to your baby biz era. Same person + two totally different stories = one hella confused dream client.
4. You're saying all the right things, but someone has turned the volume down on your personality and without it, there's nothing to make your dream client pick you over the next person. If your website reads like it could have been written by anyone with a ChatGPT subscription, nobody will say, “omg, this is written for ME."
Which means all those leads that should be dream clients swooning in your inbox, fangirling over your services, turn into them saying Bye Bye Bye.
Strategic, personality-led website copy is the peanut butter to your traffic's celery. Together, they turn your website into the clear, confident, round-the-clock sales tool it was always meant to be.
Two ways to fix your website copy and help you book dream clients all year-round
But as any website copywriter will tell you, not every copy problem needs the same fix.
Some websites need a full glow-up with done-for-you website copywriting. Others need more of a push in the right direction and a good kick up the bum to get there - say ahoy to copy audits.
And with all that in mind, I want to play a game.
Don't worry, I can promise this has a significantly better ending than any Saw movie. But like Jigsaw himself, I am going to make you choose.
And to get your answer, we’re going to do this Buzzfeed style.
The Quiz: copy audit or done-for-you copywriting? Let's find out!
The rules are simple. Answer honestly, count up your As and Bs, and I’ll meet you at the end to deliver your fate. (The good kind, honest.)
1. Your website enquiries are...
a) Inconsistent and all over the shop. The occasional dream client sneaks through, but so does the person asking what you can do for $20 and whether you'd consider "exposure" as payment. (If exposure was what you wanted, you would have applied to go on MAFS, so that's not happening).
b) What enquiries? On the rare occasion something does land in your inbox, it's so misaligned it makes you want to cry a little. Your website is giving crapola and you know it.
2. Your website copy was last updated...
a) Recently-ish. You've been in there tweaking things, adding new offers, moving things around. It's not perfect and you're not totally sure it's hitting the mark, but you haven't completely abandoned it.
b) Ha. Updated. That's cute. Your copy has been sitting there untouched, low-key embarrassing you since approximately the pre-pandemic era. It doesn't reflect who you are, what you charge or the clients you want anymore. At this point, it needs less of a refresh and more of a full-blown rescue mission (with the helicopter and everything).
3. Someone asks for your website link. You...
a) Send it, but not without a little internal eye roll and a mental note that says "yeah, I really need to sort that out." It's not terrible. It's just not where you want it to be.
b) Feel your stomach drop straight through the floor. The thought of a dream client clicking through and judging every word makes you want to hide under your desk with snacks and never come out.
4. When you sit down to write your own copy, you...
a) Get stuck, second-guess everything and end up with something that's fine but feels like it's missing something. You know there's a better way to say it, you just can't quite get there on your own.
b) Open the doc, stare at it, write one sentence, delete it, rewrite it, hate it, scream at the screen like it can hear you, then close the laptop. You'll do it tomorrow. (You won't do it tomorrow.)
5. When it comes to DIYing versus outsourcing in your business...
a) Dedicated DIYer through and through. Give you the tools, the direction, the clear plan and you're off. You love learning on the job and you're good at it.
b) You've got a graveyard of templates, freebies and courses you downloaded with the best intentions and never once opened. (No judgment. We've all been there.) You know your lane and website copywriting is not it.
6. Your schedule right now is...
a) Busy but manageable. You could make time for this over the next few weeks if you knew exactly what you needed to do. You're motivated, you just need someone to point you in the right direction and then it’s on like Donkey Kong.
b) Client work is eating everything alive and your own business tasks have been at the bottom of your to-do list so long they've grown roots. If you don't hand this to someone else, it's simply not going to happen and you’ll be stuck in the same spiral, letting Instagram run your business.
7. Your dream scenario is...
a) An expert comes in, tells you exactly what's wrong and why, shows you how to fix it with real, tailored examples you can actually follow, and then gets out of your way so you can hit the ground running.
b) Done and you’re proud of it. You want your website copy written properly, by someone who knows what the f they're doing. So you can get back to your client work with Ted Lasso re-runs in the background, knowing your website is attracting clients for you on repeat, without you tweaking anything.
Results time: tally up those scores
Okay so. Mostly As or mostly Bs? I'm DYING to know (oops, it wasn’t supposed to end like a Saw movie).
Mostly As: The Persuasion Blind Spot Audit has your name on it
You've got the drive, the ideas and the willingness to roll up your sleeves and get to work.
Pair that with the expert advice and actionable examples from a comprehensive website copy audit, and you've got everything you need to fix what's not landing and start converting dream clients on autopilot.
You're unstoppable!
Mostly Bs: The 'Chosen One' Website is waiting for you to sell like it’s your destiny
You're done. Done tweaking, done second-guessing, done opening that Google Doc, writing one sentence, and closing the laptop in a rage of “why does this STILL sound awkward”.
You don't want a roadmap. You want it taken off your bloody hands and returned to you exactly how you imagined (or even better).
Cool. Let's go!
5-8 pages of done-for-you website copy, written so you can sell with confidence while you're in client sessions, on holiday or watching Stranger Things with your dog.
Ready to stop losing dream clients? Here's what to do next
Even with consistent traffic and a killer design, copy that isn't written to sell will cost you enquiries every single time.
Your dream client lands on your site and either doesn't feel like you're talking to them, doesn't understand what working with you will actually change for them, or has no idea where to go next. Sometimes it's all three at once. (Fun!)
But now you’ve played the game, you’ve got your result and you’re ready to enter your “let’s get this damn website actually selling for me” era.
So whether you’re ready for an expert roadmap to get you there yourself, or you'd rather hand the whole damn thing over to a word warrior and free up your brain for literally anything else, let's stop those dream clients ghosting you for good.
DIY with guidance or done-for-you goodness. Make your choice.
